Scents & Sense

“The sense of smell can be extraordinarily evocative, bringing back pictures as sharp as photographs of scenes that had left the conscious mind”

— [Thalassa Cruso - Horticultural Author]

The Link Between Scent & Memory is Undeniable ...

We are all familiar with those special moments when we are taken aback by a tiny sensory stimulus that evokes an emotionally intense memory from our past. Often the mind cannot define nor depict the scent, it often cannot isolate or even name the aroma – but it does have the power and strength to awaken our senses and transport us back to that moment in our life. It may be the scent of the lavender as you brush past it on a summer evening walk that reminds you of childhood holidays, or it may be the scent of wood-wax that takes you back to your school gymnasium or even the smell of the dusty books in the dark corner of the school library…whatever it is…it is special to you…it’s your ‘scent-key’.

Other senses also stimulate memory. We want your memory of opening an Evoqua candle to be one that is cherished and remembered. We have added some thoughtful touches that help create a lovely buying experience; the scent of a fresh bouquet of home-grown herbs, a handwritten and personalised card on seeded paper, a beautifully boxed candle wrapped in recyclable tissue paper…and then, when you take the lid off your candle, your ‘scent-key’ unlocks your memory and once again you are transported to that special place.

When we talk to clients about the scents they enjoy, it is important we know why they like them. By painting the picture of what memories those scents hold, creates an anchor in their mind that they will cherish forever. One of our clients loves our Eucalyptus, Lemon & Mint scented candle. Originally from Australia, she yearned for the scent of the Eucalyptus to fill her home once again, and whilst she still desperately misses her family, she felt this scent was a bridge between her two worlds.
